I was anticipating an interesting read when I requested this book from NetGalley. A woman in medicine called a “trailblazer” in the description makes a mistake in surgery and now works in a corset factory. And … ends up traveling in a medicine show with her son along with a German giantess, a bow-legged musician,…

Against the Wind by Amanda Cabot
Normally, I start with my own description but in this case, with such a rich story, there is no way I could write a succinct description. The first two paragraphs of the book’s description should tantalize you:
Doctor-in-training Louisa Vaughn has no intention of remaining in Sweetwater Crossing. She’s just there for a few days to help a friend. But she can’t abandon the injured man she finds at the side of the road. Until his broken leg heals, she’ll serve as the town’s doctor and midwife. She may not be fully qualified yet, but surely she’s better than nothing.
Josh Porter’s plans to win his grandfather’s challenge and fulfill his father’s final wish to gain full control of the family business hit a roadblock when he breaks his leg. But his enforced stay in Sweetwater Crossing gives him new ideas about the expansion of the company into new territory–ideas Louisa could help turn into reality.
Anything but Plain by Suzanne Woods Fisher
When you are the bishop’s daughter, you are expected to do things right. Everything. And Lydie Stoltzfus doesn’t fit that description. Nothing she does seems right; all she seems to do is disappoint people. All people. She is at the point where she plans to leave.
Lydie has been let go from every job; she has one last chance. The local doctor needs someone to fill in at the front desk temporarily. But Dok recognizes symptoms of an unusual but treatable disorder for the Amish. Can she convince Lydie she can help her before Lydie goes “English“?
The Surgeon’s Daughter by Audrey Blake
This is only a small part of this book. There is so much more. Dr. Croft’s battles with an envious and far less learned doctor. Daniel, Nora’s almost-finance, works with Dr. Croft. How a diphtheria epidemic is handled. Midwives knew so much about birth, but their knowledge was ignored by the medical profession. You will…
Life Flight by Lynette Eason
You know how people say that a book was so good you couldn’t put it down? Well, I tried. I definitely tried. “Life Flight” is a page turner from the very beginning. Just about the time you think Penny and members of her life flight team are safe…then they’re not. I had to keep reading or something might happen to her or someone else. That killer is relentless. I definitely recommend this book. Turns out laundry can be done another day. Be aware, nail biting may occur while reading.
